Catholic Life and Mission
At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Christ is at the heart of all we do. Our Catholic identity shapes every aspect of school life, guiding the way we learn, the way we treat one another, and the way we grow as a community rooted in faith, hope, and love.
Our Mission
St Joseph's Catholic Primary School is an inclusive, vibrant Catholic community where we enable and encourage everyone to share and nurture a love of learning and the love of Christ. Together, we hope to inspire ourselves and each other to be the best we can and to embrace our future with confidence.
Our mission statement is to 'Go shine in the world and live as Jesus lived.' This mission is lived out daily in our classrooms, our relationships, and our commitment to celebrating the God‑given uniqueness of every child.
Our Patron Saint: Saint Joseph
Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and husband of Mary, is the patron saint of our school and a guiding example for our whole community. His life of quiet strength, deep faith, and humble service inspires us to follow Christ with courage and love. At St Joseph’s, we look to him as a model of kindness, responsibility, and trust in God’s plan.
A key piece of scripture that reflects Saint Joseph’s character and faith is:
“Joseph did what the angel of the Lord commanded him.” (Matthew 1:24)
This simple but powerful line captures Joseph’s trust in God, his obedience, and his willingness to follow God’s call even when the path was uncertain. It is a message that inspires our whole school community to listen, to trust, and to act with courage.
A Model of Faith and Service
Saint Joseph is known for his gentleness, his hard work, and his unwavering commitment to caring for the Holy Family. He teaches us that holiness is found in everyday actions — in helping others, doing our best, and showing love through service. His example encourages our pupils to grow into thoughtful, compassionate young people who use their gifts for the good of others.
A Protector and Guide
Just as Saint Joseph protected and guided Jesus, we believe he watches over our school community today. We ask for his intercession in our prayers and celebrate his feast days with joy and gratitude. His presence reminds us that God calls each of us to live with integrity, patience, and hope.
Living Out His Values
Throughout the year, children learn about Saint Joseph in their Religious Education lessons, through prayer and liturgy, and during special feast day celebrations. His values — humility, obedience, courage, and love — are woven into our school mission and the way we treat one another each day.
Our Christian Values
We strive to follow the teachings of Jesus by nurturing the spiritual, academic, and emotional development of every pupil. Our Christian values—such as respect, compassion and forgiveness—are woven through our curriculum, our behaviour expectations, and our wider school life. These values help our children understand what it means to live a Christ‑centred life and to contribute positively to the world around them.
Compassion: A deep awareness and sympathy for another’s suffering.
When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. (Mark 6:34)
Integrity: Having strong moral principles, for example: honesty, decency, fairness, equality.
Doing the right thing even if no one sees!
Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8)
Respect: To regard highly, value, honour.
And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them (Luke 6:31)
Excellence: Being outstanding or extremely good.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as though you were working for the Lord. (Colossians 3:23-24)
Determination :Resolution, resolve, willpower. Always doing your best in everything you do!
Stand firm, and you will win life. (Luke 21:19)
Inspiration
The process of being given passion and/or ideas for a task.
I can do all things through he who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
Friendship
Mutual trust and support.
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (1 John 3:18)
Honesty
Truthfulness, loyalty, fairness, sincerity.
The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. (Proverbs 12:2)
Community
A connection with each other. Helping everyone around us, no matter who they are!
We who are many, are one body in Christ. (Romans 12:5)
A Community of Faith
We work closely with our parish and the wider diocesan family to support children in developing a deep and reflective relationship with God. Through prayer, worship, celebration, and service, we help our pupils grow in faith and recognise their call to “go shine in the world and live as Jesus lived.”
Living Out Our Catholic Mission
Our Catholic Life and Mission is expressed through:
- Daily prayer and collective worship
- A rich Religious Education curriculum
- Celebration of the liturgical year
- Catholic Social Teaching embedded across the school
- Strong links with our parish priests and local community
- Opportunities for pupils to lead, serve, and make a difference
Together, these elements help us uphold the rich traditions of the Catholic faith while nurturing confident, compassionate, and thoughtful young people.
Charitable Giving at St Joseph’s
“I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35)
At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, charitable giving is an essential expression of our faith in action. Inspired by the teachings of Jesus and guided by the example of our patron, Saint Joseph, we encourage our pupils to recognise the needs of others and respond with compassion, generosity, and courage.
We teach our children that every act of kindness—no matter how small—helps to build God’s kingdom of justice and love. Through discussion, prayer, and practical action, pupils learn how poverty, injustice, and inequality affect members of God’s family both locally and globally, and how they can make a real difference.
Faith in Action: Supporting Our Local Community
As a school rooted in the heart of Camden, we are committed to supporting those in our local community who are most in need.
Camden Foodbank
We work closely with the Camden Foodbank, encouraging pupils and families to donate food and essential toiletries throughout the year. A collection basket is available in the school lobby at all times, and donations can be dropped off via the school office. This ongoing support helps ensure that vulnerable families in our area receive the help they need with dignity and care.
Our pupils understand that this is a direct way of living out Jesus’ call to feed the hungry and welcome the stranger.
Many of our charitable initiatives are led by our School Council, made up entirely of pupils. They help plan fundraising events, raise awareness, and encourage the whole school to take part. We want our children to grow into courageous advocates—young people who speak up for what is right and take action to support others in the local, national, and global community.
St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) & Depaul UK
We raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society, which supports vulnerable and homeless young people. We also support Depaul UK, a charity providing emergency accommodation, housing advice, counselling, and family support to prevent youth homelessness. These charities reflect our belief that every person deserves safety, dignity, and hope.
Plan International UK
Through Plan International UK, we sponsor two children in Kenya. Monthly non‑uniform days raise funds to support their education, healthcare, clean water, and future opportunities. This helps our pupils understand global solidarity and the importance of standing alongside children in the world’s poorest communities.
New Ways – Turkana, Northern Kenya
We also support New Ways, a charity working in Turkana County, Northern Kenya. Their work focuses on:
- Water
- Health
- Education
- Nutrition
- Agriculture
- Fishing
Our school is twinned with St Joseph’s Primary School in Nariokotome, Turkana. Donations from our community help provide meals and education for the children who attend, strengthening the bond between our two St Joseph’s families.
National Appeals
Each year we also support:
- The Poppy Appeal in November
- Red Nose Day
- CAFOD – the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales
CAFOD’s work in hard‑to‑reach places, war zones, and areas affected by natural disaster reflects our shared belief that no one should be beyond the love and support they need to live a dignified life.
